Rolled out of bed but haven’t been sleeping, Paralyzed, realizing I'm caught in a quarter life crisis. Autopilot left me up to my knees in quicksand, But I can't sit back and wonder what the point of life is. No more excuses, I gotta get up and get moving and leave this town. Goodbye New Jersey, I'm taking control of my story, Not a background player no more. I'm not getting any younger, Got the drive, can't sit in park at a drugstore counter. So I'm hopping upon the train to leave the suburbs For the city lights across the river. So I step out of Penn Station Onto streets I could get lost in, Take a breath, Look around, I know I'm gonna make this my new home.
2.
I’m paying rent, But there just ain’t much left over for me. For a shoe box, It’s the place where I go to sleep, Lay my head down and forget my dreams. Am I powerless When it comes to the check that I’m bringing home? ‘Cause common sense Says I should leave this all behind, Can’t be treading water at 25. Waited all week for the chance to break free, So I’ll call up my friends And we’ll hit the streets. Worked so long almost forgot how to play, We’ll raise our voices now And no one can take ‘em away. ‘Cause we want the night! Leave our troubles in the daylight. Give us the night! Leave our troubles in the daylight. We want the night! New York, The city is a playground for VIPs, So dive bars Are the place where we spend our time ‘Cause cash goes fast in a single night. (Excitement rising as the sun goes down, Let’s raise a glass and toast to make each second count! We’re gonna leave our mark on the town Getting out of control, dancing till we hit the ground!) And there’s no telling, There’s no telling What to expect or who we’ll meet. There’s no telling What the night brings now!
3.
Twisting my neck just to get a look, Blondes and Brunettes, you all have me shook. I can’t help but think you're all out of my league. Still I approach, trying to connect Until my plan becomes a trainwreck. I get so mesmerized I can barely speak. I wanted to say "hey baby, Would you like to share a drink and some time?" Before I could, you threw your drink in my face, As I took in the view of the skyline. Oh, New York Girls, You deal another blow to my heart. New York Girls, Your words hit like a poison dart. You’re in this city looking for the best, So I won't let myself be anything less, Thanks to you, New York Girls. So I pick myself up off the floor, I love your fire, leaves me wanting more. Call it an off night, but I'm just having a ball. I'll attempt another silly stunt Until you hit me with your knockout punch. When you shoot me down it strengthens my resolve. Make it happen in Manhattan Or keep looking in Brooklyn. Growing keen on Queens, Can't go wrong in the Bronx. I don't find myself in Staten Island much, But I don't wanna leave it out of this song! Take me, take me to your neighborhood. Show me a slice of that city life.
4.
Someone wake me from this sleep. I wanna feel alive ‘Cause it's been weeks, And I'm in too deep, Am I the only one Stuck in a cage? Wanna make an escape, But the key's just out of reach. I need a shot at revival, This is for my survival, Bring me the party ‘Cause I can't do it by myself. I'm a bottle rocket looking for a spark, I need your fire to get me out of the dark, So strike a match and light the fuse. I can't wait forever, now the choice is clear, I really need you to get yourself over here, So strike a match and light the fuse. When you arrive here on the scene, Get the blood pumping, Check for a beat, And gimme some electricity. You'll be my saving grace, Then the night is ours, I know the perfect place For the fireworks display. Hurry up and don't be late, Please don't make me sit and wait, The suspense is too much to take. Someone wake me from this sleep, I wanna feel alive. Light me up, Light me up, Strike a match and light the fuse, ‘Cause I’m coming, coming after you.
5.
Baby, put your sweatpants on And let’s hop into bed. Baby, why should we go out When we can order out instead? Now that I’ve punched the clock And arrived at your door, You’re ready for the weekend Your hair’s down and wine glass in hand. Braved the city crowds And streets to make it here. ‘Cause baby you are the reason, So now what’s the sense in leaving? Stumbling in from a hectic week, And you’ve had no chance to rest your feet. So what are you waiting for? Dim the lights and shut the door. Baby, put your sweatpants on, And let’s hop into bed. Baby, why should we go out When we can order out instead? ‘Cause there’s nowhere else in the world I’d rather be, Than to stay in here with you between the sheets. So baby, put your sweatpants on, And let’s hop into bed. There’s a party downtown And all our friends are there, But it’s where the trains ain’t running, Traffic at every junction. You’ve kicked off your shoes, Binge watching’s underway. Don’t wanna see no one else, I want you all to myself. Draw the blinds, Let the city never sleep, For a good time Staying in the Upper East. We got all we need When it’s just you and me. So what are you waiting for? Dim the lights and shut the door.
6.
You are a dancer Without a partner, And I’m lonely just as well. The beat makes you move, But you’re looking ‘round the room At a table by yourself. I’m searching for A charming thing that I could say To give you some company. Can’t look away Once you shoot a glance my way, You pull me in like a beam. ‘Cause you’d mystify Anybody with those eyes, And I just can’t break free. You tie my tongue As I’m trying to calm my nerves, Though I’ve yet to say a word I just wanna say… Out of every last girl you’re the perfect one, Out of all the guys here I’m the lucky one, ‘Cause so many would kill to be in my place. I’m the lucky one, I’m a very lucky one. It’s all a blur But I have some way with words ‘Cause you smile and move in close. You take my hand, My heart pumps adrenaline, Onto the dance floor we go. The seconds feel like minutes Moving towards your lips. The anticipation of your kiss, It’s killing me. So let’s get outta here.
7.
Life of the party now with something I gotta prove. Feeling naked now that I'm face to face with you. I'll switch from beer over to tonic and gin, ‘Cause I'm only comfortable out of my skin. The conversation flows as I’m picking up the pace. My hands would tremble but they're wrapping around your waist. My pained expressions fade into silly grins Now that I’m comfortable out of my skin. Oh yeah, of all the bars in the city, How did someone so pretty End up here for our paths to cross? Oh yeah, my mind keeps on racing, How can I keep faking After all the drinks have worn off? ‘Cause when I’m sober I don’t know where I should begin, So I stay comfortable out of my skin. Feel the connection now as I start to fill with dread, And while we're kissing I start thinking too far ahead. I get your number but the room starts to spin, That's what I get for being out of my skin. Oh yeah, I'm no social butterfly, You caught me on a good night, What happens on an average day? Oh yeah, I'd ask you to coffee, You wouldn’t recognize me, I'd fumble any words I could say. Until I watch your patience start to wear thin. That's why I'm comfortable out of my skin. Snatching defeat from where I thought I had a win. I’ll just stay comfortable out of my skin.
8.
You're so cool in the shadows with your cigarette. It would be a real shame if we never met. And I don't talk much but now I am, I don't get out much but here I am. I’m ready for a night that we can't forget. I got a couple in me now. (I'm feeling kinda restless.) We're just young and stupid now. (So let's do something reckless.) I just gotta know if you're on board with me. If you tell me the truth now, I want you to dare me, I want you to dare me. I wasn't sure if you were joking or you were serious, ‘Cause these approaches can come off as a little spurious. I don't get out much but here I am, Done with the no-shows, so here I am. I gotta admit, you got me a little curious. I got a couple in me now. (I'm feeling kinda restless.) We're just young and stupid now. (So let's do something reckless.) I just gotta know if you're on board with me. If you tell me the truth now, I want you to dare me, I want you to dare me. Look into my eyes if that's how you feel, Let's shed these disguises and start to get real. Tons of surprises in store if we get crazy, So let's get crazy! And I don’t talk much but now I am, Done with the no-shows so here I am, I’m ready for a night that we can’t forget. I got a couple in me now. (I'm feeling kinda restless.) We're just young and stupid now. (So let's do something reckless.) I just gotta know if you're on board with me. If you tell me the truth now, I want you to dare me, I want you to dare me, I want you to dare me!

Was it a roll of the dice or some twist of fate That we found each other here in this place? You're more than just a pleasant surprise, You are the diamond in the rough of the dive. ‘Cause I didn't know that I could dream Here in a city that can never sleep. But that all changed when you took my hand, As we’re not looking back, No let's never look back. ‘Cause adventure awaits so let’s chart a course, The city is ours for us to explore, Let’s make tonight our odyssey! Crosswalk lights blink for us to walk, All the cars stop for us to cross. They say "get lost among the avenues, ‘Cause there's so much ahead for you to do." You're an elegant rebel and rock and roll queen, I melt when you smile at me. My heart pounds like our steps on the street As we’re not looking back, No let's never look back. There’s nowhere we can’t go, And nothing we can’t do Now that the bar has faded from view… I look in your eyes, I see something there Under the streetlights, it’s time to declare This is just the start of our story! And I can't believe the night it's been, Let’s keep the whole thing going. Let's get lost among the avenues, ‘Cause there's so much ahead for me and you.

I took your dare and followed where it led me. The night was through and I had hit a dead end With a stranger in my bed, Then a pounding in my head overcame me. Could've spent the day at home and just reflected, If I'm gonna be alone, why not accept it? But at this table for two, I curse myself for keeping up these niceties. Chemistry's a funny thing. Remove one piece and you’re left with nothing Just like all the other times before. I thought I found in you a spark, But I’m still wandering in the dark. On the surface you’re somebody Who could break me from this routine, But underneath beats a recycled heart. Underneath beats your recycled heart. Been sorting through the trash searching for treasure, But value's more than just one night of pleasure. You came on strong at first, But it's a mask for all your insincerity. You had your fun and you got what you wanted, And this awkward date has got me feeling haunted By all the other times I realized I need a change of scene. This is no way to spend my Saturday. Chemistry's a funny thing. Remove one piece and you’re left with nothing. Every night out follows the same script. I know the ending but still fall for it. And I can't listen to you blather on, Trying to force some kind of bond, So have a good one and get home safe.
11.
Skyscrapers fade slowly For suburban homes, it’s so boring. Heading back into the same old grind, Medicating so that I won’t lose my mind With weak coffee, stomach queasy, Eyes holding open just barely. Wish I could say it was the night of all nights, But it was all erased by the daylight. She’s got me wondering where it all went wrong, And troubles resurfacing now that the night is gone. So hello New Jersey, Didn’t think I’d see you so soon, But the train it carries me Across the Hudson, I’m coming home to you. Hello New Jersey, Can you help me lick all these wounds? I’m not proud to ask, But you’ve had my back So I’m coming home to you. Retrace steps to see clearly, All the thinking hurts my head dearly. Rewind the picture for the missing scenes, Staring blankly at the seat in front of me. ‘Cause I thought there was something Til’ her eyes they, showed me nothing It wasn’t like our night last night on the town, Built up my hopes to watch them get knocked down. I’m not afraid to admit when something’s my doing, But I need help to know so I don’t do it again. ‘Cause all that I’ve got left Is a hole ripped in my chest, An empty wallet, And a pounding in my head. She’s got me wondering where it all went wrong, Feeling like I’ve been hit by the train that I’m sitting on. She slipped through my hands, Gotta try again, Now I’m coming home to you. Feeling pretty rough, Let me sleep it off Now that I’ve come home to you.
12.
After a wonderful night out, Let’s make it a wonderful afternoon. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be than right here with you. Let’s follow the hostess To a lovely window seat. I’m looking forward to more time between you and me. “Isn’t this place great?” I ask, you nod as a reply. My mind is drawing blanks, so back to the old standby… “So tell me where you’re from? Tell me what do you do?” I ask between my forkfuls of eggs and pancakes too. The crowd is louder still, And your eyes stare at your food As you meekly give an answer, and I pretend to hear you. Was it something I said, or something I didn’t? We lit a flame last night, but tell me what spark lit it? I’m racking my brain for something to pique your interest. I hope it’s not too late for us to make some progress. I’ve got a belly full now, And you’ve barely touched your plate. More minutes passed by than the number of words exchanged. And with a half-hearted hug, I ask when I can see you next. You just smile politely, Waiting for me to take the check. The chemical enhancement has lost its power. Don’t you wish that chemistry would last a little longer?
